Using AI to Improve Tilapia Farming

Tilapia is one of the most farmed food fish on the planet, prized for fast growth, hardiness, and tolerance of crowding. That same crowding is what makes accurate monitoring so valuable, and so difficult. In a dense pond or tank of turbid, warm water, small errors in average weight or feeding behaviour scale into large differences in cost and yield.

Why sampling struggles with tilapia

The usual method, catching a few dozen fish and extrapolating, is especially weak for tilapia. Densities are high, so a hand-caught sample is a tiny fraction of the population and rarely represents it. The water is often murky, and the fish are easily stressed by handling. You end up making feed and harvest decisions for tens of thousands of fish based on a stressed sample of forty.

What AI adds in turbid, crowded water

Vision models tuned for warm-water conditions measure the fish where they are, without netting. Instead of a single average from a small sample, you get a size distribution across thousands of fish, updated continuously. Two things follow from that:

  • Feed matches reality. Tilapia grow fast, so biomass moves quickly. Current biomass keeps feed rates on target instead of chasing a number that’s already out of date, which directly protects feed cost, the biggest line on the farm.
  • The slow tail shows up. High-density systems often hide a slower-growing minority. Seeing the full spread lets you grade or adjust before that tail drags out the harvest window.

The models are built for the turbid, high-density reality of tilapia production rather than clear-water demos, which is what makes the numbers usable on a working farm.

Tilapia farms range from sophisticated RAS to earthen ponds, and not every site is ready to install cameras. The low-friction way in is footage you already capture on a phone or GoPro.
